The image to the right shows an oblique view of her lumbar spine. The arrows point to examples of the osteophytes or bony spurs that have formed due to stress. These osteophytes were invisible on x-ray, so present-day people may have chronic backpain due to osteophytes but be told that their x-rays are perfectly normal, and that their bones are not the cause of their backpain!
